    New Releases Fri 24 June

THE AVETT BROTHERS - True Sadness - Republic
In a heartfelt personal letter penned by Seth Avett, Grammy Award®-nominated alternative folk collective The Avett Brothers revealed details of their new album, True Sadness [American/Republic Records]. The first single is titled Ain't No Man.  The record reflects THE AVETT BROTHERS artistic, musical, and personal evolution over 16 years as a band. Eloquently describing what's to come on the horizon, Seth writes, True Sadness is a patchwork quilt, both thematically and stylistically. Wherein a myriad of contrasting fabrics make perfect sense on the same plane, this album draws upon countless resources from its writers and performers. He goes on to cite pervasive and cornerstone influences such as, Queen, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Jimmie Rodgers, Tom Petty, Nine Inch Nails, Gillian Welch, Aretha Franklin, Walt Disney, Pink Floyd, Kings of Convenience, calypso of the 1950 s and country of the 1930's. Most importantly, he assures, Throughout the album, we stitched together the boldest red and the calmest green, polka dots and stripes, the roughest denim and the smoothest velveteen. They came together because they are the best patterns we have and because each of us brought our own fabric to the quilting frame.

RICH ROBINSON - Flux - Eagle Records
With Flux, Rich Robinson presents his most accomplished solo album to date--13 new, original songs that draw deeply on his diverse roots. A blues-rock odyssey straight from Robinson’s soul, the guitarist returned to Applehead Studios in Saugerties, NY, the recording facility that has become his creative hub. Nestled away within Woodstock’s famed artist enclave, Robinson’s work at the studio has yielded Woodstock Sessions, The Ceaseless Sight, and now Flux.

DEERHOOF - The Magic - Polyvinyl Records
After all the accolades from press and peers, what’s a legendary band to do? Forget the recording studio, rent out an abandoned office space in the middle of the New Mexico desert, set up, plug in and play REALLY LOUD. Starting with hardly a notion of the outcome, by seven days later Deerhoof had found (you guessed it) The Magic: a raw and refreshing 15-song wallop of an album about what happens when you leave your comfort zone.

"98 uninterrupted minutes long, Earth flows as a collection of 13 songs from throughout my life, songs I have written about living here on our planet together. our animal kingdom is well represented in the audience as well and the animals, insects, birds and mammals actually take over the performances of the songs at times." - Niel Young

WE ARE SCIENTISTS - Helter Seltzer - 100%
We Are Scientists, the Brooklyn, New York based power pop troupe return with their fifth album. Titled Helter Seltzer and released via 100% Records, it is preceded by the single release of 'Buckle', the album's opening track. For this album We Are Scientists asked their ex-keyboard player Max Hart to produce. Max had just finished a three-year stint as the keyboardist for international super-mega-person Katy Perry, choosing as his final gig Ms. Perry's performance at the 2015 Super Bowl. After a number of small producing projects squeezed in between tours, he was ready to roll up his sleeves and dive in. Max rented a studio space in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighbourhood, outfitting it with gear he had accumulated over a decade of obsessive internet shopping. In early March, the team got to work. At their disposal was a trove of new We Are Scientists demos as well as Max's inside-out familiarity with hits like 'Teenage Dream' and 'Firework' and 'Dark Horse.' Sifting through the options, a direction emerged: they would use the tones and trickery of radio pop to add a sweet sheen to the new crop of distinctively We Are Scientists songs. Months of toil and trial and error finally brought the right balance, and the finished recordings were shipped to mixer Chris Coady at Sunset Sound in L.A. Coady has quietly emerged in recent years as one of the finest mixers of glossy indie pop, with credits that include Future Islands, Beach House, and !!!. In 'Helter Seltzer' he knew he had an album that should shimmer but also bang, and he applied all of the magic and sauce at his disposal to insure it did exactly that. Finally, the music was passed through the deluxe mastering machine that are the ears of Greg Calbi (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Noel Gallagher, Perfume Genius) to add a coat of heft and sparkle, and in January of 2016, nearly a year after construction began, the album was pronounced complete.

THE EXPLORERS CLUB - Together - Goldstar Recordings
The Explorers Club mark their return with Together, the quintet's third album of harmony laden sounds. Hot off the heels of "Freedom Wind", their first release which showcased their Beach Boys influences, and the triumphant follow-up "Grand Hotel", an exploration of Classic soft pop ideals, "Together" is sure to be the soundtrack for Summer 2016. Jason Brewer, founder and visionary of the band, has patterned the album in the mold of post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys classics such as Friends, Sunflower and Love You, while adding his own unique touches and flourishes of inspiration with his band mates. Listeners can expect exquisite harmonies, tight musicianship, flowing melodies, and gorgeous vocals. Standout tracks include the modern sunshine doo-wop of "California's Calling Ya", the bouncy pop of "Once In A While" and the contemplative "Quietly". "Together" is a must for fans of well-crafted pop music.

    JON PARDI - California Sunrise

JON PARDI - California SunriseJON PARDI - California Sunrise - Capitol NashvilleJON PARDI - California Sunrise
Capitol Records Nashville's Jon Pardi releases his highly-anticipated sophomore album, California Sunrise, on June 17. The album's lead single, Head Over Boots, is a swinging, mid-tempo tune and immediately connects with fans and gives a taste of what to expect from the California native's upcoming second studio album.  Pardi is often commended for sticking to his traditional country roots. I always want to have the traditional country soul while meeting the new standards of country music, explains the country singer. As with traditional country music, much of the appeal comes from a compelling narrative. Pardi adds, As a songwriter, we're looking for a good story and we're always looking to push the limits. I love having those lyrics that at first make you think it's about one thing, but it's really about something so much more. In the studio, Pardi and Butler captured a palpable live energy on California Sunrise by recording each song with a full band. I'm a big fan of a live band recording and it was really important for me to get that sound on my record, says Pardi. The heart of this record comes across with a live band. We used seven guys - one band, and there's something special about that. California Sunrise is the follow-up to Pardi's celebrated debut album, Write You A Song, featuring his Gold-selling Top 10 hit, Up All Night, along with fan-favorites What I Can't Put Down, Missin You Crazy and When I've Been Drinkin.

Elizabeth Cook - Exodus of Venus

Elizabeth Cook - Exodus of VenusELIZABETH COOK - Exodus of Venus - Agent Love MusicElizabeth Cook Video
Elizabeth Cook didn't quite know what she was doing. But she knew there were songs, and they had to get out. Six even years since her critically acclaimed Welder, as well as much personal tumult, there were songs that needed to be born. From Dexter Green's (also the album's producer) opening electric guitar, equal parts foreboding and fraught, Exodus of Venus hurls a churlish witness to erotic upheaval and the drives that subsume our best notions. Vinyl available 7/8

    Sarah Jarosz - Undercurrent

SARAH JAROSZ - UndercurrentSARAH JAROSZ - Undercurrent - Sugar HillSarah Jarosz Video
On Sarah Jarosz's fourth album, Undercurrent, the impact of being a full-time artist living in New York City is palpable. A gifted instrumentalist, singularly expressive vocalist and songwriter of rare insight, Jarosz anchors her new record with a haunting quartet of songs written and performed solo 'Early Morning Light,' 'Everything to Hide,' 'Take Another Turn' and 'Jacqueline.' She expands her palate from the swampy defiance of 'House of Mercy' to the nostalgic 'Back of My Mind.' Undercurrent captures the process of personal evolution and discovery as well as the inspirational nature of change. Vinyl available Now

MOGWAI - Atomic - Temporary Residence
Atomic, the new album by Scottish experimental rock legends Mogwai, is composed of reworked versions of the music recorded for the soundtrack to director Mark Cousins' acclaimed documentary Atomic: Living In Dread and Promise, which first aired on BBC Four last summer. Constructed entirely of archive film, Atomic is an impressionistic kaleidoscope of the horrors of our nuclear times - protest marches, Cold War sabre-rattling, Chernobyl and Fukishima - but also the sublime beauty of the atomic world, and how x-rays and MRI scans have improved human lives. Mogwai's soundtrack encapsulates the nightmare of the nuclear age, but its dreamlike qualities too. It is the latest in the band's series of impressive soundtracks and scores, following acclaimed albums Les Revenants (The Returned) and Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait. Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite says: "The Atomic soundtrack is one of the most intense and fulfilling projects we've taken on as a band. Ever since we went to Hiroshima to play and visited the peace park this has been a subject very close to us. The end results, both the film score and the record are pieces I'm extremely proud of."

MUMFORD & SONS - Johannesburg EP - Glassnote
Mumford & Sons are very proud to release their new set of recordings entitled Johannesburg, made with Baaba Maal, Beatenberg and The Very Best. The songs were recorded in Studio 2 and the Auditorium of the South African Broadcasting Corporation, Johannesburg in February over two all- day and all-night sessions and produced by Mumford & Sons and The Very Best's Swedish electronic music maestro, Johan Hugo.

  • Al Scorch - Circle Round the Signs

“The finest country-punk-folk-bluegrass banjo player in the country.” --HUFFINGTON POST
        •    Chicago’s favorite alt-country punk rock banjo player!
        •    Al tore up Texas with a number of SXSW appearances that garnered at least two mentions from NPR music. “..my sentimental favorite had to be Al Scorch, a rumpled Chicagoan whose old-time banjo jams were cut with humor and everyman charm. —Stephen Thompson.
        •    First track recently premiered at Pop Matters. http://www.popmatters.com/post/al-scorch-everybody-out-audio-premiere-new-album/
        •    Al will be on tour all summer.
Al Scorch grew up in Chicago, with its storied history of corrupt power at the top and righteous fighters and big dreamers at the bottom. From the town that gave the world characters like Studs Terkel, Upton Sinclair, and the anarchists in Bughouse Square, Scorch adds his voice to the choir with the enthusiasm and charisma of a Maxwell Street preacher. With a stentorian bullhorn of a voice, he exhorts not with a holy book in his hand, but a banjo and guitar. He’s a messenger with a conduit, a believer that a soul-stirring song will march you forward.
Balanced on wedges of punk, old-time string band, American and European folk, and soulful balladry, Al is an entertainer, road warrior, storyteller, and one helluva musician. His Bloodshot debut is on a sonic framework sharing an intersection with the Bad Livers’ lawless next-gen take on traditional country & bluegrass, and Black Flag’s burn-it-all-down revolt and breakneck tempos. Like a punk rock banjo-wielding John Prine or Billy Bragg, Al Scorch writes for the every person.

Pick up the new album by banjo burner Al Scorch now at the DE! LP ($18.99) and CD ($10.99) Also be sure to check out his upcoming gig at the Jig and Reel on June 18th.

    Bands performing schedule:

    • 12 PM - EmiSunshine - T-shirts and CDS available now at the store.

It’s impossible to explain the exceptional talents of EmiSunshine, an 11-year-old East Tennessee prodigy who has captured the nation’s attention as a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.  Steeped in Appalachian music, she is a true vocal stylist, one who instinctively knows how to interpret the nuances of a song with her impressive range, even though she has yet to gain the life experience and empathy seemingly necessary to fully comprehend the words she sings. Despite a given name that reflects optimism, she is drawn to darker themes of pain, anguish and even murder, like that of The Louvin Brothers, whom she loves.

    • 1 PM - Appalachian Surf Team

Members: Guitar / Sean Sparbanie- Guitar / Drew Fulton- Bass / Rodney Sheehan- Drums / Austin Polley
    Genre: Surf-Rock
    Hometown: Knoxville, TN

    • 2 PM - Roomsounds

There’s a reason legions of young rock fans fall in love with their parents’ records. It’s the same reason so many radio stations still play classic rock: Great music never gets old. And it’s what prompted singer and guitarist Ryan Michael to reinvent his sound, leaving behind his teenage past in a Warped Tour band signed to a Warner Bros. subsidiary and relocating from Connecticut to Texas.

“We wanted to immerse ourselves in the South,” explains Michael. “To be around the best blues and country players. It all just seemed so much more authentic than the shit going on around me.”

The entire band embraced those influences — Beatles, Stones, Petty, Big Star, Faces and Oasis to new a few. Along with guitarist/vocalist Sam Janik, bassist/vocalist Red Coker and drummer Dan Malone, The Roomsounds make their own sound, initially from a run down industrial space with no heating, cooling or plumbing. They’re now living in a proper house in East Dallas, but not much else has changed. There’s always someone over– beautiful women, musicians and what the band calls ‘permanent guests,” all decked out with long hair and bell-bottoms. They’ve created their own Exile in Dallas and the music shows it.

    • 3 PM - Mountains Like Wax

Murfreesboro, TN based band Mountains Like Wax is satisfying hungry fans one show at a time with their relentlessly poignant and exuberant Southern post-rock. Having played over fifty plus shows in the past year and counting without a sound recording, they are proving to be a band to watch as they charge to the forefront of Middle Tennessee’s burgeoning indie rock scene. Mitchell Taylor (vocals, guitar), Samuel Katz (guitar), and Preston Vaughn (drums) are now ready to commit their sound to tape and make a rallying cry for their generation as they wrap arms around those begging to know will the future render glory, will it be pliable, or will it melt and fade?

    • 4 PM - La Basura Del Diablo

Members: *Whitey Mack - Vocals *Chris Howler - Bass *G.W. Swift - Guitar *Mick Dagger - Drums *Carlos Satana - Guitar *Brad Luttrell - Manager
    Genre: Horror Rock & Roll
Hometown: Old Grey Cemetery, Knoxville, TN

    • 5 PM - Automatic Stops

    Alex Hensley - Guitar/Vocals
